How My Kids' Weddings Became Part of Our Family Legacy

How My Kids’ Weddings Became Part of Our Family Legacy

In a span of just 15 months, all three of our children got married.

Our daughter Molly married Michael in Washington state in July, 2017. Then our youngest son Sam married Nicole in May, 2018, and our oldest son Ben married Amberlee in October, 2018. We traveled to Texas for both our sons’ weddings.

Helping our kids plan their weddings was a wild ride! But each one gave us a mixture of sweet moments, as well as a few inevitable funny mishaps, providing stories we’ll never forget.

At Picture This Organized, our mission is to help our clients preserve their legacies, and I can’t think of many other events that contribute to family legacies the way weddings do. (more…)

How to Take Charge of Your Family History Research

How to Take Charge of Your Family History Research

Deep down, all of us long to know where we came from. We want to understand our roots, see our ancestors’ faces in photos, learn their names and stories.

Along the way, we even uncover funny details that make our families unique. Erma Bombeck once wrote, “I come from a family where gravy is considered a beverage.”

You can’t lose a detail like that! We want to make sure we relish and archive as much of our history as possible.

Perhaps you’re a budding genealogist, just beginning your research – or maybe you’ve been looking into your family history for some time, and you find yourself with a growing, unorganized, genealogy collection.

Either way, we’ve got some tips in this post that will help you sort through the confusion growing inside the tangled branches of your family tree. (more…)

How We Can Help You Build a Top-Notch Family Photo Website with SmugMug

How We Can Help You Build a Top-Notch Family Photo Website with SmugMug

As our families grow and relocate, many of us find ourselves separated from loved ones by cities, states and sometimes oceans.

We stay connected and up-to-date with the details in each other’s lives thanks to technology like text messaging, video calls, or social media.

But what happens when we want to share photos with one another across the miles? Photo file size can limit what we can attach in an email, and some photo sharing sites limit the number of photos, or don’t keep your images secure.

Our team is excited to introduce a new service, building family photo sites using a web-based photo sharing solution called SmugMug. Here’s three reasons you might consider working with us to create your own family photo site using this site: (more…)

Reimagine Your Family Holiday Card

Reimagine Your Family Holiday Card: Our 2018 Guide

November is here, and that means it’s time to start thinking about this year’s holiday card.

While we may receive a few embossed cards with an artful image on the front and a thoughtful sentiment inside, at least 75 percent of the cards we receive every year feature photos.

Looking at photos in our holiday cards keeps us connected to friends and family far away. We get to watch children grow and celebrate milestones like graduations and weddings that have happened over the previous year.

Because it’s fun to receive news and pictures from friends at the holidays, many of us also enjoy sending our own photo cards every year. But coordinating and executing that family photo card can add to the stress of preparing for the holiday season.

To help lighten the load, and throw some creative fun into the mix, we’ve created our 2018 Holiday Greeting Guide. Some of these ideas might just surprise you! (more…)

7 Creative Ways to Showcase Yearly School Photos

School and September mean “Picture Day!” to many parents in the United States. We sent our kids off to school that morning with their hair combed, and wearing a sparkling new outfit (hoping and praying it still looks good at picture time).

But when we get the prints of the adorable school portraits, what happens next?

Most of us admire our kids’ pictures for a few days and maybe give some to grandparents at Christmas. Eventually, the rest of the prints we ordered accumulate in a box, forgotten for years to come.

What if you rescued those photos out of storage, to display in some fun and creative ways? The challenge: avoiding displays that make your child uncomfortable or embarrassed when people see them.

Here are some ideas for creatively displaying yearly school portraits.

How to Tell Your Family History in a Keepsake Photo Album

How to Tell Your Family History in a Keepsake Photo Album

“To forget one’s ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root.” –Chinese Proverb

Do you have boxes of old family pictures and memorabilia stashed away in closets? If so, you might be looking for a way to use them to tell your family story.

Documenting your family history will preserve it for future generations, allowing them to remember and connect to their heritage. The good news is you don’t have to be a genealogy expert to create a lasting keepsake of your family’s history.

A wonderful way to hold onto and share the memories is to create a family history photo book. To celebrate my mom’s 80th birthday, my sisters and I created a keepsake album of our family history as our gift to her. (We included sample pages from the book in this post.)

As I work with my clients, I find that many families have a designated family historian. Is that you? If not, maybe you’re reading this post because you would like to be!

Here are our tips on telling your family story by creating a keepsake album. (more…)

How to Create a Meaningful Memorial Tribute Video

How to Create a Meaningful Memorial Tribute Video

Memorial tribute videos are a beautiful and meaningful way to say goodbye to a friend or family member.

Tribute videos can help you illustrate how a person lived and honor that person’s memory. They’ll also be a great opportunity for people to get to know a different side of a loved one, through the story of the photos you share.

Most importantly, working on a memorial video can be a healing part of the grieving process.

Grieving families might get overwhelmed by this process, though. If you’re not sure what tool to use, how to choose the right photos, how many images to include, or how to add music to the video, creating a tribute video can seem like an insurmountable project at a very tough time.

Creating memorial tribute videos is a service we offer here at Picture This Organized, but we wanted to give a quick explanation, for anyone who would like to create their own video for a friend or loved one. However, if this project is too overwhelming during this time, we would love to help you create a beautiful video to honor your loved one.
